TRAINING WEEKEND NEWS

The BWBA organises several weekends of bowls each year for wheelchair bowlers at its HQ at Stoke Mandeville IBC, Bucks.

The latest of these weekends included the running of the popular Kay Pipe Pairs. More experienced bowlers are teamed up with less experienced ones – a format which is always popular. Some of the notable pairings this time were : the Anglo-Welsh combos of Paul Brown & Howard Dare; Percy Powell & Brenda Penny and Kevin Woolmore & Margaret Baker.

The early round matches determined the semi-final line-up. In the first semi, David Smith & Chris Jones took on Percy Powell & Brenda Penny and lost by six shots. The second semi saw Kevin Woolmore & Margaret Baker up against Paul Brown & Howard Dare. It was a narrow win by four shots for the former.

In the final it was the two P’s who came out on top. Powell & Penny won by six shots ahead of second placed Woolmore & Baker, with third place taken by Brown and Dare.

The second day of the weekend was taken up with coaching for both the experienced and less experienced bowlers. Also, new bowler Colin Swaithes came along for some advice from BWBA GB Coach Penny Tyler who helped him with the aid of the video camera which has proved so useful in coaching all bowlers.
